Birmingham LGBT and SHOUT Festival are delighted to be presenting a fantastic programme of Queer Arts across the city as part of Birmingham Pride 2016, funded by Birmingham Pride.  On this page you’ll find complete listings for all the SHOUT Festival Queer Arts events, performances, screenings, and exhibitions happening in the lead up to and throughout Birmingham Pride 2016. All events are open to absolutely everyone (please see specific listings for booking details) so join us for some outstanding queer arts and entertainment!

 


WHAT: Prem Sahib – VIP Coffee Morning and Exhibition Tour

Join Grand Union and Birmingham LGBT for a VIP coffee morning and exhibition tour of Prem Sahib’s solo exhibition ‘Grand Union’ in the gallery space, led by Programme Director Kim McAleese. DETAILS: SHOUT and Grand Union are pleased to present a solo exhibition of new work by artist Prem Sahib. Sahib’s work is informed by the atmosphere of spaces where physical encounters happen, places where there is a potential to touch and be touched. The exhibition title, Grand Union suggests bodies coming together. Sahib’s aesthetic draws heavily on the environments and interiors of saunas, clubs and public cruising venues, where ideas around anonymity, touch and proximity are at play.

DETAILS: Drag and dressing up have long played an important role in the sexual counter culture. From cross-dressing male prostitutes in 19th century ‘molly houses’ to Lady Gaga’s alter ego Joe Caldrone, men and women have mixed dressing up, making up and style to help define their sexuality, parody ‘normal’ society and simply wrong-foot people’s assumptions about sex, gender and identity. This exhibition examines how recent generations have used drag and dressing up to challenge, subvert and entertain.

DETAILS: In celebration of Birmingham Pride 2016, SHOUT has teamed up with Electric Cinema to bring a selection of titles curated by both SHOUT and Electric.  ORIENTED is a feature documentary that follows the lives of three gay Palestinian friends confronting their national and sexual identity in Tel Aviv.

DETAILS: Join SHOUT and MY Comedy for the best in queer comedy to kick off Birmingham Pride 2016!  Maureen Younger will be joined on stage by Jayde Adams, Mary Bourke and Birmingham’s favourite Mrs Barbara Nice!

DETAILS: In celebration of Birmingham Pride 2016, SHOUT has teamed up with Electric Cinema to bring a selection of titles curated by both SHOUT and Electric.  Mrs Barbara Nice joins us to present THE SOUND OF MUSIC!  Based on the real life story of the Von Trapp Family singers, one of the world’s best-known concert groups in the era immediately preceding World War II. Julie Andrews plays the role of Maria…  need we tell you more?  Not to be missed!

DETAILS: Relax at Pride and join SHOUT and Birmingham LGBT for a coffee at Moment’s Café with superb Birmingham acoustic favourites Faye Bagley and Zara Sykes performing throughout the afternoon. Along side this Amnesty will be screening their film ‘African Pride’ (59mins) which explores how South Africans are countering homophobic violence and hate crimes with township Pride events and protests.

DETAILS: In celebration of Birmingham Pride 2016, SHOUT has teamed up with Electric Cinema to bring a selection of titles curated by both SHOUT and Electric.  Kids being raised by same sex couples are growing in numbers worldwide.  We are in a Gayby-Boom.  But who are these kids?  What do they think about having same sex parents?  And do they face different issues to other kids?  At a time when then world is debating equality, these questions are more important than ever.  Told from the perspective of the kids, GAYBE BABY is an intimate and sometimes humorous account of four children and their families.
