Pride in Sport

First trialed as a strand of activity in the inaugural SHOUT Festival in 2009. Pride in Sports was designed to build capacity within the diverse LGBT community sports sector and beyond. In doing this we created inclusion, awareness, expression and challenge issues surrounding LGBT access to sport and associated subjects. Weekend festivals and taster days have been held since 2010, showcasing the variety of sporting activities available for the LGBT community in the West Midlands, which are delivered in Birmingham and encourage participation amongst these traditionally disengaged communities. The Pride in Sports Festival had three key strands of activity.

“Taster” sessions in a variety of sports which are swimming, badminton, football, cycling, running, cricket, table tennis, yoga, boxing, lawn tennis and rugby.

Competitive elements including national showcase events in football, swimming, and badminton.

As well as providing participatory activity, the festival will also highlight homophobia in sport through a complimentary programme of film and debate; this will be funded separately to this bid.
