Heart of the Rhino (2012)

Birmingham-LGBT-Pink-Logo

The Rhino  defines and delineates the Gay Village in Birmingham. It provides a stunning visual entrance to the area.

In order to fully explore and develop the potential of the work and embed it  within the community, artist Jo Hodges developed a project to make a Heart for the Rhino. The ‘Heart of the Rhino’ project ran concurrently with the making/installation/launch of The Rhino and contains personal stories from the LGBT community, their lives and histories, and is situated inside the Rhino sculpture.

The Rhino now acts, as ‘Guardian’ to the stories, making the sculpture more personally relevant to those living, working and playing in the area.

A video piece was produced and sealed inside the rhino, and shown alongside it at the launch.
