Birmingham LGBT Centre has moved to a brand new centre in the heart of the Gay Village. To celebrate, we’re featuring staff and community members, the people who make our centre and village.
Chris (he/him)
Lead development officer, Substance support service

“I have worked at Birmingham LGBT since November 2017. Starting as a sessional worker, I soon became a full time team member within the sexual health team where my main focus was supporting people who engaged in chemsex.
Along with the support I provided I was able to deliver training sessions to professionals of the world of chemsex and look at ways that people could better gain support.
When the opportunity arose for Birmingham LGBT to provide more support for the community with wider drug and alcohol issues, I jumped at the opportunity to lead this service. I have now been the lead for the substance support service for the past 2 years.
In my personal life I am a lover of nature and the outdoors. Priding myself on my jungle themed garden. I also keep a large collection of unusual and exotic pets, which gives me great joy.”

Hi, I’m Eric! I’m the Older Persons Events Worker here at Birmingham LGBT, where I run Golden Babs — our fabulous group for LGBT+ people over 50. We meet for coffee mornings, socials, and activities that bring joy, connection, and community. I also work with Shout as a community producer, spreading dance and creativity across the city.
I’ve been involved in dance and activism for many years, and it’s amazing to now bring that experience into creating safe, fun, and welcoming spaces in Birmingham. I really believe in the power of art, movement, and laughter to bring people together — and that’s at the heart of everything I do here.
Outside of work, you’ll usually find me teaching Waacking, Voguing, and Disco classes (with glitter included, of course!). I love sharing these dance styles with beginners, and I always keep a few free spots open for LGBTQ+ refugees and asylum seekers to join the fun. I also started the Kiki House of Scutaro here in Birmingham to help lay the foundations for the local ballroom scene.
When I’m not dancing, I’m probably enjoying music, chatting over coffee, or planning the next fabulous event. Life is too short not to add a bit of sparkle — and I’m proud to share that sparkle with our community.
