BLACK HISTORY MONTH 2023: COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT ON KAYLEE GOLDING

This month we are celebrating Black History Month UK with Birmingham Pride & SHOUT Festival. Follow us as we shine a spotlight on the incredible LGBTQ+ black individuals making moves in our community, as well as businesses, events and resources in our vibrant city.

Meet Kaylee (she/her)

Tell us about yourself Kaylee!

I’m Kaylee Golding also known as your favourite Gyal From Brum. I am an award winning DJ & Radio Presenter. I currently present a national daytime show weekdays 1pm-4pm on BBC Radio 1XTRA. This is where I get to champion black music and culture. From celebrating black pride, to sharing stories from the Windrush generation. As well as doing my radio show I run a platform called ‘On Your Gaydar’. We have a podcast sharing the voices of LGBTQ+ people of colour, about the content that matters to us. We also run events like brunches, or club nights where LGBTQ+ people that love black music can come and freely express themselves, but also make friends and create community of people around them!

What does Black History Month mean to you?

For me black history month is all about being able to take up space and share black voices! It’s a time where people are almost prompted to learn about black culture, and the history of African and Carribean people. And when people have such busy lives, sometimes they need a month or a national day as a prompt to take that time to learn and reflect. And to really break down the walls of ignorance with knowledge and love. But lets not forget people of black heritage are black every day not just for one month, so we have to celebrate achievements of the black Indvidual’s all year round. But Black History month is an important moment in time to really reflect on who paved the way before us but also who is making history right now. And what does the future look like for Black Brits.
