Birmingham LGBT’s Statement on the Conversion Therapy U-turn

Share

Following the UK Governments decision last weekend to U-turn twice, first scrapping the Conversion Therapy ban entirely then subsequently specifically excluding trans people from protections, Birmingham LGBT fully supports Stonewall’s decision to withdraw from the government’s “safe to be me” conference.

We are delighted to see that the joint action of the LGBT sector has had a real impact, with the conference being cancelled Tuesday evening. While this event once had such positive potential, it is impossible to support an initiative from a government that so flippantly disregards our safety, and whose actions contradict their event’s own stated aim of preventing violence and discrimination.

The fight to end conversion therapy for ALL LGBT people continues, and we encourage everyone to support the #BanConversionTherapy campaign. https://www.banconversiontherapy.com/; and sign the following petition: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/613556.

Finally, as a message to all trans people: we deserve fully equal treatment under the law, but further to that: our worth as human beings is not determined by whether or not a government considers it convenient to protect us at a given time. You matter, #TransRightsAreHumanRights.
