Birmingham LGBT has been watching the scenes that have spread across the country over the last week of far-right rioting with a sense of horror, shock and despair. At a time when trans people and migrants – some of the most vulnerable members of our communities – are having their human rights attacked, it is vital that we come together in solidarity to condemn the abhorrent racist violence that we are witnessing.
We would like to share with you a poem from 1946, which is as relevant today as it was then. Please don’t forget the lessons of history.

First They Came
First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me
