Andrew first visited Birmingham LGBT centre back in February 2013, when it was still being set up. Very quickly he ended up becoming a volunteer in our very first volunteer cohort, taking up roles managing reception and also getting involved with various outreach and fundraising events. Andrew is now our longest-serving volunteer, and we are so grateful for everything he has contributed.

“During the years I have been volunteering, all the staff have been so welcoming and have always checked in on me to make sure all is well. Even down to if I required anything from the shops or do you want a break or should I bring down a tea or coffee. For me that makes me feel helpful by playing a small part to help the centre continue offering all its service and groups.
Even though my main role as a volunteer over many years is meet and greet, I have helped with various other activities including the Birmingham Pride march and community stand, alcohol awareness, fundraising events and the official opening of the Vault with the guest appearance of the Warwick rowers as they were known back then.
I will say if you thought about becoming a volunteer for Birmingham LGBT Centre, give it a try out. Show your interest and take it from there. Not only are you helping by volunteering your time, you are gaining new experiences during your time volunteering whether it is at the centre or outside of the centre.
I don’t think I would come back and offer my time if it wasn’t for the centres staff and fellow volunteers. Because for me it’s a wonderful community of volunteers and staff. And even if I can contribute in small ways, then I know that my time volunteering is worthwhile.”
