Fitness February – a month of activities

It’s a wrap! Fitness February was fantastic!

Thank you to everyone that was a part of it – each and every person who took part, those who helped organise sessions, and to our partners, the venues, coaches and instructors.

Try something new with Birmingham LGBT for Fitness February: A month-long programme of free sports, activities and fitness tasters for the LGBT Community in Birmingham, offering something every single day for you to try.
Relax, workout, meet people, learn new skills, do something exciting!

Around 10pm – pub crawl around Birmingham’s Gay Village (likely venues include the Loft and Sidewalk)

 Badminton programme

Come and play badminton with Midlands Out Badminton.
Whether you’re a regular player, returning to the sport, or have never seen a shuttlecock in your life, these sessions are for you.
The four FitFeb Saturday taster sessions are free and run from 10:30-12:30 – come along to one or more. There’s the benefit of an experienced coach to show beginners the ropes and teach you the game.

Rugby programme

Give rugby a go with FitFeb taster sessions from Birmingham Bulls RFC. Whether you’ve never held a rugby ball before, played at school, or know exactly how to tackle – these sessions are for you.

Running programme

This February, try out a run with the Birmingham Swifts. Whatever your ability, sessions are friendly and supportive.
Day: Tuesdays

Meeting point: At the MAC, Cannon Hill Park, Queen’s Ride, B12 9QH
Session details: Running – led technical session

The Tuesday sessions are suitable for anyone who can jog or run for ten minutes.
Please wear suitable footwear and sport clothes (and a sweatshirt if it is cold).
There are toilets in the MAC.
You don’t need to book – just turn up.

The Thursday sessions are suitable for people who can jog or run for twenty minutes or longer.
Please wear suitable footwear and sport clothes (and a sweatshirt if it is cold).
It’s possible to get changed, and leave bags, at the Birmingham LGBT Centre.
And there’s drinks and food at The Fox afterwards.
You don’t need to book – just turn up.

Session details: Cannon Hill parkrun (5k)

The Swifts will be at Cannon Hill parkrun every Saturday during FitFeb. It’s an individual timed 5k, suitable for people who can jog or run for around thirty minutes. Join us for breakfast at the MAC afterwards.
Please wear suitable footwear and sport clothes (and a sweatshirt if it is cold).
Register with parkrun in advance but you don’t have to book a particular Saturday .

Swimming programme

Get swimming with the Shoals this February! Sessions are relaxed and sociable and have exclusive use of the Moseley Road pool.
Everyone is welcome at the Shoals’ sessions, but if you identify as trans or gender non-conforming and would like to swim with others who do too, take a look at the TAGS sessions below too.

The Shoals invite you to join them for free FitFeb swims.
These three Wednesday sessions have a coach invited to assist any swimmers who would like to improve.
The 8-8.30pm swims are followed by water polo tasters 8.30-9pm.
The swim sessions are suitable for any level: being able to swim a 22m length preferable, but possible to swim half a length and stay in shallow water.
There are individual changing cubicles with larger cubicles available, and M/F and accessible toilets in individual cubicles.
There is an accessible toilet and a hoist available.
BSL level 1 to aid deaf swimmers.

These February Sunday sessions are offering a dedicated women’s lane (everyone is welcome at all sessions).
There are individual changing cubicles with larger cubicles available, and M/F and accessible toilets in individual cubicles.
There is an accessible toilet and a hoist available.
BSL level 1 to aid deaf swimmers.
Car parking is free on-street outside or nearby, Edward Road. Buses 8 or 50.
You don’t need to book – just turn up.

Moseley Shoals has been swimming around Birmingham since forming over 12 years ago. The group is friendly and social, offering the chance to meet up for a splash about or a rigorous swim.

Derren says; “It’s a fantastic way to make friends.”

Moseley Shoals also swim on Mondays, 8:30pm at Sparkhill (public session). If you’d like to join them on a Monday, pay on entry at the pool (£6) for your swim and sauna and the Shoals will refund your first session after the swim.

Swimming for triathlon programme

If you can swim 100m freestyle (front crawl) and have maybe even thought about doing a triathlon (an event combining swimming, cycling and running), here is an opportunity to swim in the University of Birmingham’s new pool and take your swimming to the next level with this swimming for triathlon session.
This session is supported by Birmingham Running, Athletics and Triathlon club (the BRATs!).

Walking programme

Get walking with Rainbow Rambles in FitFeb. Rainbow Rambles host regular easy walks around Birmingham which are popular with a wide variety of people from beginners to more experienced walkers.

Water Polo programme

Give water polo a go with the Bluefins – combining teamwork, strategy and swimming, if you’ve ever wondered what this is about, now is the time to find out! And if you’re an experienced or returning player, come and try our sessions and show us your moves.

Yoga

Ballet with the BRB

Move, dance and get fit with the Birmingham Royal Ballet this February!

Ballet active taster with the Birmingham Royal Ballet.Based on ballet techniques and Birmingham Royal Ballet’s extensive repertory, ballet active is a class designed to provide a gently aerobic programme that tones and stretches the body while improving coordination and musicality.

Bring with you comfortable sports-wear, socks and indoor trainers, there are individual M/F toilets in individual cubicles which can be used to get changed.

Bollywood Dance

Tell a story, learn to dance and have a great workout at the same time with Bollywood Dancing.

Bollywood dancing has an element of fun and storytelling to it. At the end of learning a routine, you don’t just learn the moves and have a fantastic workout, but you’ve devised a piece, a performance. The music always help brighten your mood, and encourages everyone, irrespective of abilities to join in!

Line dancing

Learn different steps and moves to different pieces of music with our Line Dancing sessions this February!

Line Dancing is a form of choreographed dance performed to music. You will be taken through a sequence of different steps and movements which are performed as a group in a line. Focusing mainly on movements of the legs and feet, learn all kinds of steps that you’ll be practicing even when you leave!

Football programme

Give football a go with Birmingham Blaze! Whether you have played before or are completely new to dribbling, heading and kicking balls, these free taster sessions are a great way to try football in FitFeb!

Aerobics

Work as much or as little as you need in our low impact Aerobics class. Tone, strengthen and get active!

Aerobic classes, cardio-based and low-impact. No matter what your ability, these can help to lift your mood whilst improving coordination and overall fitness levels.
These classes involve toning movements, with some low-intensity strength activities.
You don’t need to book – just turn up.

Indoor Climbing

Come and try Indoor Climbing this February. Learn techniques, challenge your grip and strength and have a great time!

Meet other people and challenge your body with indoor climbing. These fun, supervised sessions get you started with this sport. This taster session is intended as introduction to the sport – come along and try it out.

Karate

Combining technique, focus and precision with lots of teaching during this session. If you’ve ever wanted to try Karate, now is the time to come along!

A form of martial arts, learn the movements, techniques and Karate uses of kicks, punches, blocks, strikes, and grappling using all parts of the body.
The group will be working in a matted area, so no shoes are required and socks can be worn initially for the general ‘warm-up’. Please wear loose comfortable clothing, changing rooms with showers are available. Jewellery will need to be removed for the session only. For safety, finger and toe nails should be kept short and blunt.

Fencing

Don’t miss the chance to try this fantastic sport that combines strategy and technique with speed and agility!

Learn all about Fencing moves and techniques during this session. Challenge your focus and ability, it is the perfect time to come and try out such a fascinating sport!

Kettlebells

Learn how to safely use Kettlebells, increase your strength and have lots of fun during a Kettlebell session. Come to learn as a beginner or push your limits as an improver!

Session details: Kettlebells

The class consists of working through a range of different exercises that will work multiple muscle groups simultaneously. No matter if you are a beginner or advanced, we have a range of weights to suit your abilities. This will drive your fitness levels up sky high and challenge your entire body.

Boxercise

These classes involve using boxing methods and techniques for fitness. Work in pairs, individually and as a group during each session. All abilities are welcome!

Session details: Boxercise for all

Each class is different, with a focus on padwork and footwork. Along with this we also work on bodyweight, coordination and agility exercises to improve our boxing skills, accuracy, core strength and power. No matter what your ability, if you’re someone who wants to get fit through boxing and interval training whilst having fun, then this is the class for you!
You don’t need to book – just turn up.


Table Tennis

A workout full of agility, speed and lots of fun! Come along and try to keep up with your opponent!

Session details: Table tennis session

A sport consisting of two or four players who hit a lightweight ball back and forth across a table using small bats. Improve your coordination, speed and agility whilst having fun. The faster you move – the better the workout!
You don’t need to book – just turn up for part or all of a session.


Circuits

This is a whole body workout structured in the form of a circuit. Learn all types of exercises from bodyweight and cardio, to strength and balance. Beginners, come for an introduction and regulars, come to improve and learn more!

Usually in the form of interval training, perform one exercise for a certain amount of time before moving onto another. A quick, fun way to get stronger and fitter in all areas of your body!

Pilates

Pilates is a great class for your posture and core, keeping the essential muscles mobilised and strong for life.
Day: Wednesdays

Session details: All levels Pilates class

Pilates involves small, controlled movements and you work through a variety of exercises. A lot of the class is done lying down – but you will definitely feel the difference!

Roller Derby

The Birmingham Blitz Dames invite you to try out roller derby this February. This action-packed contact team sport is played on roller skates on an oval track. The taster will get you started with skating, agility and safe falling!

Get skating with the Blitz Dames. To book your place, email newrecruits@birminghamblitzdames.co.uk with your shoe size. Skates and pads are provided.
Wear comfortable clothing you can move and sweat in, and bring a drink or refillable bottle.
