Climbing Out Birmingham: Birmingham’s LGBT Indoor Climbing Group

Climbing Out BirminghamA new LGBT Indoor Climbing Group started in July.

To give Climbing Out Birmingham a great start, Birmingham LGBT are funding entry to sessions during July.

This means if you can climb safely without supervision, you can climb for free at these sessions!

Entry includes free harness hire too, courtesy of Redpoint, if you need it. And we’ll even throw in shoe hire for the first 25 people who request it.

If you’re not already a member at Redpoint, you’ll need to pay the £3 annual membership fee on your first visit…but that’s it!

Request to join the Climbing Out Birmingham Facebook group to be a part of all this, and to keep up to date with what happens, and ongoing sessions!

Sessions will be held at Redpoint Climbing Centre Birmingham, who are supporting the group and are keen to get it up and running.

If you’re new to climbing, or haven’t yet learnt to belay safely, but want to give it a go and be a part of Climbing Out Birmingham, there will be a Redpoint instructor available for an hour during the Sunday sessions – see below for times. They can help you to have a go. This is free every Sunday in July, first come first served!

July planned sessions are:

  • Sunday 1st – from 3:30pm
  • Tuesday 3rd – from 6:30pm
  • Sunday 8th – from 3:30pm
  • Tuesday 10th – from 6:30pm
  • Sunday 15th – from 3:30pm
  • Tuesday 17th – from 6:30pm
  • Sunday 22nd – from 3:30pm
  • Tuesday 24th – from 6:30pm
  • Sunday 29th – from 3:30pm
  • Tuesday 31st – from 6:30pm

At Redpoint Climbing Centre, 77 Cecil St, Birmingham B19 3ST

These sessions won’t be supervised and are undertaken at your own risk. You must be over 18, be a competent belayer and identify as LGBT. You’ll need to go to reception when you arrive and sign in to Redpoint (fill in their registration form and pay your £3 if it’s your first time at Redpoint), ask to sign in for ‘Climbing Out Birmingham group’, and (the first time you attend) complete an anonymous monitoring form.

Beginner “have a go” planned times:

  • Sunday 1st – 4-5pm
  • Sunday 8th – 5-6pm
  • Sunday 15th – 4-5pm
  • Sunday 22nd – 4-5pm
  • Sunday 29th – 4-5pm

Again, you must be over 18 and identify as LGBT. You’ll need to go to reception when you arrive and sign in to Redpoint (fill in their registration form if it’s your first time at Redpoint), ask to sign in for ‘Climbing Out Birmingham group’, let them know that you wish to be part of the beginner group, and (the first time you attend) complete an anonymous monitoring form. Places are offered on a first come, first served, basis.
Please note that climbing requires a certain level of movement and physical ability to take part and you’ll need to wear comfortable clothing that you can move freely in.

What happens after July?

After July, if group continues, Redpoint have generously offered:

  • Discounted Climbing Out Birmingham sessions, £1 off the standard admission price (£8 at the time of writing, so £7 entry)
  • Free harness hire (normally £2)

as long as there are at least four of you that are climbing as part of Climbing Out Birmingham at each session.

Join the Climbing Out Birmingham Facebook group to keep in touch.
